Asylum
What is an Asylum?
An asylum is a form of protection granted by a country to individuals because they have suffered persecution, torture, or fear that they will suffer persecution or torture due to race, religion, nationality, membership of particular social group or political opinion. The persecution can take various forms, such as threats to their life, freedom, or physical safety.
Asylum is also a legal status that allows the person to remain in the host country and seek safety and refuge from the harm they would face if they were to return to their home country. An asylum petition may only be filed if the person is physically present in the country that is requesting the asylum and is not a citizen of that country.
If the asylum claim is approved, the person will be granted refugee status. This status allows the refugee to legally reside in the host country and may also provide them with certain rights and benefits, such as the ability to work, access healthcare, and eventually seek permanent residency or citizenship.
